JOB PURPOSE:
The successful applicant must be able to supervise and train reporters, handle the pressure of daily and weekly deadlines, and lead by example with top-notch writing and reporting skills. S/he must be proficient in reacting to and covering breaking news and also identify trends and write features in numerous business arenas.
Applicants must have excellent sources and produce ground-breaking stories about the business sector, together with the reporters they work with. They source and assign reporters to various events and news leads; assist reporters in sourcing news leads and gathering information required to produce thorough in-depth articles; follow up on reporters progress daily and ensure articles and feature stories are submitted before the deadline.
The successful applicant assists senior editors in editing submitted drafts; pitch ideas for in-depth feature and agenda articles; have or develop an adequate understanding of the topics covered by the publication; and occasionally write and submit articles before the predetermined deadline.
S/he is required to help improve journalistic and writing skills through feedback and discussion with editors; communicate with senior editors in a timely and efficient manner; file weekly story budgets; and give editors advance notices on stories in progress.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Hold an undergraduate degree in journalism, communications, or other related areas in social sciences. Demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English. Adept in Amharic is an added advantage. Time management, communication, and leadership skills. Have at least one year experience in roles with a similar job description. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
